From 2004 to 2006 I gave an annual three-hour tutorial about EHR Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs). While some terminology is dated (for example, WfMSs are now called Business Process Management Systems), the concepts are even more relevant today. P.S. I’ve been a HIMSS Social Media Ambassador for six years in a row. Join me on Twitter at @wareFLO to to help spread the the message: Viva la Workflow! (Take me to the beginning of these slides!)
Then, of course, there this the better coordinated activity delegation–this is real-time. Because the electronic health record workflow management system knows what’s happening and why and for how long and where this information can be feed back into the todo list and also into the status screen so that everyone can build a shared mental model and they can see what activities are waiting and if any are languishing to go and flexibly accomplish those activities.
- Real-time (minute by minute)
- Activity tracking
- Shared mental Model of Workflow Activities
- Activity Management
- Flexible assumption of uncompleted activities
