2004 EHR WfMS Tutorial Slide 42-43: Example: More Complex Process Definition “Peds Visit, Well Visit, New”

From 2004 to 2006 I gave an annual three-hour tutorial about EHR Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs). While some terminology is dated (for example, WfMSs are now called Business Process Management Systems), the concepts are even more relevant today. P.S. The process definition that we’ve been using is simple in order to introduce these complicated concepts. This is a more complicated process definition taken from an actual work-a-day electronic health record workflow management system. The reason for the visit is that this is a pediatric visit, it’s a well visit, and it’s new [first visit for this patient, therefore most extensive workflow]. In the nursing role: get the patient, vitals signs, medications, allergies, collect a preferred development check list (preferred for that nurse or the patient’s physician), preferred health education checklist, family and social history, a preferred review of systems. What we have here are activities that are in fact process definitions that include multiple tests such as hearing and sight. So you can see that one can construct as elaborate a process definition as is required or desired to support the EHR record workflow management system is intended to support.
