Workflow management systems developed for other industries such as banking and finance may not be easily adapted to healthcare’s unique needs. For example, there is an unfortunate stereotype that workflow manage- ment systems necessarily tell human users what to do. Properly designed, an EHR workflow management sys- tem should allow users to interrupt workflow processing in a variety of convenient ways, from “I’ll be right back” to “Cancel this” to “Forward this to…” to “I’ll do latter” to “I’m finished”. It must be the human users (and especially the physician) who are always in control of the EHR, with the workflow management system simply making them super efficient!
