Let’s start with the basics. According to the Workflow Management Coalition, workflow is “The automation of a business process, in whole or part, during which documents, information or tasks are passed from one participant to another for action, according to a set of procedural rules. Two points about this definition. First, “from one participant to another” can also include from one participant back to themselves at later time, such as when one sets a reminder, which is equivalent to passing tasks to yourself in the future. I do this will email and voicemail all the time. But most important is this notion “according to set of procedural rules.” This is a core concept to workflow management and we will return to it over-and-over again during the rest of this presentation.
