Here is a more complicated definition–Workflow Management System–what is that? It is “A system the defines, creates and manages workflows through the use of software, running on one of more workflow engines, which is able to interpret the process definition, interact with workflow participants and, where required, invoke the use of IT tools and applications.” Two points about this definition. First, “interpret the process definition.” This the “set of procedural rules” mentioned in the previos definition of workflow. Second, a workflow management system has a relationship to workflow system similar to that of a database management system to a database [system]. You really can’t so anything with a database unless you have a database management system. When you buy an Access database you need access. When you buy an Oracle database you need the Oracle database management system.
Definition of Workflow Management System: Workflow Management Coalition
- “A system the defines, creates and manages workflows through the use of software, running on one of more workflow engines, which is able to interpret the process definition, interact with workflow participants and, where required, invoke the use of IT tools and applications.”
